Join the Celebration! Dance, Laugh, Sing, Live and Make a Difference!

October is associated with the beginning of our organization and marks a milestone celebration of courage and perseverance. In October 1990, nine African American women, breast cancer survivors and concerned friends founded the AABCA, a not-for-profit organization in Minnesota. AABCA is dedicated to providing lifesaving information, empowerment and peer support to African American women and men survivors of breast cancer. Because of the high mortality rates of African American women, AABCA also serves to educate the public about the special needs and issues facing African Americans with breast cancer. The AABCA continues to bring awareness about the dreadful impact of breast cancer on African American women locally and nationally. October is also National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The African American Breast Cancer Alliance will celebrate its first 20 years on Saturday, October 23rd, 2010 hosting “A Night of Shining Stars Gala” at the Hilton Garden Inn, St Paul, MN. This will be an evening of elegance and fun shared with over 250 attendees who will enjoy networking, a resource fair, entertainment, and awards dinner to honor cancer survivors and remember those whose journey was ended by cancer. We invite you to share in our notable accomplishments, 20 year anniversary, and recognition of our many “shining stars”, cancer survivors, collaborators, supporters and our vision for the future. One of our special awardees and shining stars will be the Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund, founded by the family and friends of Carol who was a dedicated member of the AABCA before she was stricken with breast cancer and later dying at age 50. Her family and son, Larry Fitzgerald, Jr., of the NFL Arizona Cardinals are committed supporters of our organization.

Cancer has affected us all in many ways. Yet, we will continue to dance, laugh, sing and love in spite of this disease. On behalf of our members, we thank you for your concern, time and support. We could not do this without you!

Support Group Meetings
Every 3rd Saturday of the month, 12 noon to 2:00 pm. Call or Email us for meeting location or changes.

Black women who had experienced breast cancer founded the African American Breast Cancer Alliance, Inc. (AABCA) of Minnesota, in October 1990. The AABCA is dedicated to providing hope, awareness, education, emotional and social support to breast cancer survivors, their family members and the community. Information and action is particularly important because Black women tend to have more aggressive breast cancers at younger ages and benefit from earlier detection and aggressive treatments.

The AABCA has been recognized locally and nationally for its collaborative efforts and innovative educational materials. Being There!, our motto and title of our breast cancer information brochure for Black women, seeks to empower women to take charge of their health and take care of their lives by becoming knowledgeable about breast cancer.

Please know that MEN also can get breast cancer. The symptoms are the same as for women. If you find any signs as listed below, see your doctor to get checked immediately. Look at and feel your breasts or pectoral muscles for any changes such as:

A lump in the breasts or pecs, chest, collarbone, nipples, torso, or underarms.

Discharge or fluid from the nipples that is bloody, clear, pus like, or smells bad.

Skin changes that are bumpy, dark, different color, itchy, painful, rash-like, puckered, redness, sore/ulcer, shrunken, swollen, or tender.

Take charge of your health with these tips:

Learn about your family’s cancer history as cancer of the breast, colon, ovaries and prostate are related and either side can carry the gene.

Reduce your alchohol and fat intake, reduce your weight, and increase your exercise.
